Congestive heart cough
What does the infamous congestive heart cough sound like when it's just getting started? 14 yr-old 28 lb Brittany. Dysplastic (but showing no symptoms). Airborne skin allergies. Heart murmur, on 5mg Enalapril, twice daily. Otherwise very healthy and moderatively active. Many Brits have a funny sort of reverse-direction cough, including mine. Every day I'll give her a back-rub before I brush her, she'll rub her schnoz on the rug while squirming, and eventually do the funny cough, then it sounds kinda like she is choking, she sorta gags like she is spitting up (but nothing comes out). Been like that for years. Aside from that, she's coughing more, but generally not when she's exerting herself, like on a walk or playing in the yard. More when she's inside and mostly inactive. Her gums look nice and pink, and she's lean (her stomach looks normal). At such age, the owner is -supposed- to watch every little potential sign. Eh? Thx, P "Law Without Equity Is No Law At All. Congestive heart cough
Reverse sneezing can come from any irritant.... dust, pollen, even
pressure on the throat in some dogs.... or a drop of saliva going down "the wrong way". It is easily and quickly stopped by blocking the nostrils for a moment, making the dog "reshape" the muscle positions in the soft palate. The congestive heart failure cough, early on, is a dry hacking cough. I can imitate it in human form, but not in canine form.... But it originates deeper in the chest.... not in the upper throat. Of course, your dog will stubbornly not bother to produce the cough when at the vet's.... Murphy's Law has something to do with that, I'm sure. But your vet may be able to tell you what the difference in sound may be; s/he has heard both. Try picking up the phone. Jo Wolf Martinez, Georgia |
