Default Congestive heart failure - Tracey

Tracey, the management you describe for your family's dog reflects
hepatic (liver) failure. The dog may Also have chronic heart
failure.... But Alopurinal reduces the ammonia in the circulating
blood, one of the jobs normally done by a healthy liver. In heart
failure, the extra fluid is in the body cells, so can't be "tapped off".
In liver failure, much of the extra fluid is in the abdominal cavity,
around the organs, not in them, so is easily removed. We use the same
drug and same fluid removal technique for humans with hepatic failure.
Both disorders can be abbreviated as CHF... which can lead to confusion.
